Sermon Outline Oct 19, 2008 Evening ServiceTopic:Why Isn’t Everyone A Christian?Text: John 3:19-20Introduction
I. Gold is wonderful isn’t it? A. Everybody likes it and everybody wants it. B. In the gold-rush days people would give up everything and even risk their lives to get their hands on it. II. Jesus is wonderful too, isn’t He? A. He promises to transform a person’s life and fill it with happiness. B. Today we are going to examine two of the more common reasons why many people do not become Christians.
Text
I. Some People Are Just Too Proud And Hard-Hearted (Matthew 13:3-4, 19). A. “…the wicked one comes and snatches away what was sown…” 1. People fail to understand when they are in bondage to sin (John 8:43-44 & 31-34). 2. They love the darkness and hate the light (John 3:19-20; Titus 3:3; 2 Thessalonians 2:12; James 5:5; 2 Peter 2:13). 3. They have been blinded by the god of this world (2 Corinthians 4:3-4; Mark 2:17; Luke 15:17; John 8:31-33). B. You and I became Christians because: 1. We heard the word, understood it and accepted it for what it is (Matthew 13:8, 23; 1 Thessalonians 2:13; John 8:32). 2. We believed on Jesus that we might no longer abide in darkness (John 12:46). 3. We renounced the works of darkness and Jesus set us free (Romans 13:12; Colossians 1:13). 4. We confessed with our mouths in the presence of others that Jesus is Lord (Romans 10:9-10). 5. We obeyed the gospel and our sins were washed away and now we are free (Romans 6:3-7 & 17; Acts 22:16). II. Some People Just Don’t Consider What Jesus Has To Offer As Valuable (Matthew 13:44-46). A. Jesus demands a full commitment. 1. Jesus requires that we give our lives (Matthew 16:24-26; Luke 14:26). 2. Jesus requires a willingness to give up our wealth (Luke 14:33). 3. Jesus requires that we love Him above all others (Matthew 10:37; Luke 14:26). 4. Jesus requires that the kingdom comes first (Matthew 6:33). B. You and I became disciples of Jesus because we were willing to forsake all things to follow Jesus. 1. And we might well ask, “What’s in this for us?” (Matthew 19:27). 2. Jesus’ is willing to give you an answer (Matthew 19:29).
Conclusion
I. Pride and hard-heartedness have always kept people from obeying God. II. Many do not obey the gospel because they place a greater value on things of this world than on spiritual things.
