Topic: A Hunger For God

Text:   Philippians 3:10-11

Introduction

I.        Surely all of us are aware that many in our world struggle just to survive.

A.       Hunger is nothing new, but perhaps there has never been a time when it is so inexcusable.

B.       The term ‘hunger’ refers to “desire, longing, focus, interest, and love.”

C.      Our Lord’s words are painfully true: “…you have the poor with you always…” (Matthew 26:11).

II.       But that is not the greatest hunger in our world.

A.       The greatest problem in the world today is that we have lost our hunger for God (Luke 9:13).

B.       Some are even suggesting that the greatest problem in the church today is that we have lost our hunger for God!

C.      My desire tonight is to stir up your hunger for God, that you would seek Him with all your heart!

Text

I.        God Alone Can Satisfy Our Hunger And Thirst (John 7:37-38; 6:35).

II.       We Won’t Be Hungry For God Until We Taste His Goodness (Psalm 34:8; 119:103; 1 Peter 2:1-3).

A.       When you know how much God loves you, you will seek Him.

1.       Satan distorts our perception of who God is so we won’t seek after Him.

2.       This is a barrier to hunger that must be broken down.

B.       Let Him love you!

III.      We’re Too Easily Satisfied By Worldly Things (Jeremiah 2:13).

A.       The opposite of hunger is satisfaction.

B.       Obviously, when we hunger we seek satisfaction.

C.      Being full can make us complacent and lukewarm.

Conclusion

I.        God longs for a relationship with you.

A.       You could call it a hunger He has (Ecclesiastes 1:1-4; 2:4 & 14).

B.       How sad is unrequited love (Ecclesiastes 5:16; 3:2; 6:3).

II.       Our world suffers from severe hunger that should sadden us all.

III.      But there is a hunger that should sadden us even more.

A.       The world suffers from it (John 4:35).

B.       Sometimes the church suffers from it too.

C.      Yet, all the while, Jesus says to us, “I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.” (Revelation 3:20).

1.       And He says further, “To him who overcomes I will grant to sit with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne.” (Revelation 3:21).

2.       Won’t you overcome your hunger?

3.       Won’t you dine with the Son of God?

Darwin is dead.

Jesus is alive.

Who do you trust with your soul?
