Sermon Outline Mar 16, 2008 Evening ServiceTopic: What Should Christians Wear To Worship?Text: Colossians 3:1-17IntroductionI. There is little doubt that what people wear to worship bothers some. A. But this sermon is not about the proper attire for church attendance. B. God doesn’t care as much as man does about dress as long as it is modest and decent. II. What this sermon is about is what the Christ-centered life should look like. TextI. Realize that worship is a lifestyle, not a one-hour event (vs. 1-4). A. If you are a Christian you have been raised with Christ (vs. 1). B. If you are a Christian, then a lifestyle of worship is the standard. C. But how can you know if Christ is your life? D. Jesus said love the Lord with everything (Matthew 22:37-38). II. What not to wear to worship (vs. 5-11). A. There are some things you are not to “wear” as a Christian. 1. Sexual immorality. 2. Impurity (thoughts and actions that are sinful). 3. Evil desires. 4. Greed (likened to idolatry). 5. Anger and rage. 6. Malice. 7. Slander and lying. 8. Filthy language. B. These are the clothes you wore before you became a Christian. C. These things need to die when you are immersed into Christ. III. What to wear to worship (vs. 12-14). A. When you become a Christian, everything changes. B. Here are the clothes we are to put on: 1. Compassion. 2. Kindness. 3. Humility. 4. Gentleness. 5. Patience. 6. Bear with one another. 7. Forgive each other. 8. Love. ConclusionI. Paul finishes this section by giving us the keys to changing clothes: A. Bible study. B. Assembled worship. C. Service. D. Prayer. II. Jesus shared the parable of the wedding banquet (Matthew 22). A. God has invited us to a great banquet in heaven someday. B. Are you wearing compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience? C. Are you dressed bearing with other Christians and forgiving them? D. Over all these virtues have you put on love? |
