Sermon Outline  Nov 4, 2007 Morning Service

Topic: Do You Know Me?

Text:   1 John 2:3-6

Reflection

·   What does Jesus mean to me?

·   Where is Jesus on my priority list?

·   What tangible difference, if any, does Jesus make in my life?

·   Do I have a relationship with Jesus?

·   Is Jesus more than just going to church, singing and giving some money?

·   How do I know if I know Jesus?

Introduction

I.        There are a lot of people who know of Jesus, but who do not know Jesus.

A.       People try hard to reassure themselves that they know Jesus.

B.       Is there a difference in knowing Him and knowing of Him?

II.       How do I know if I really know Jesus?

A.       Today I pose the question speaking of Jesus, “Do You Know Me?”

B.       I want us to look at what it really means to know Him and how we can know if we really know Him or just know of Him.

C.      We are going to look at three myths concerning how we can know if we know Him followed by a great result of really knowing Him.

Text

I.        Knowing Him Is More Than An Intellectual Pursuit; It’s About Being Obedient (vs. 3).

A.       One of John’s favorite words is “know”.

B.       But what does it mean to “know” Jesus?

C.      The word “know” means to perceive, to understand completely.

D.      This knowledge involves keeping His commandments (vs. 3).

II.       Knowing Him Is More Than What You Say; It’s About Being Obedient (vs. 4).

A.       For some, if they say it enough, it becomes a reality to them.

B.       Too many profess Jesus but put no effort into what they do.

C.      Knowing Jesus takes obedience.

III.      Knowing Him Is More Than A Mystical Experience; It Is About Being Obedient (vs. 6).

A.       John subtly challenged those who claim a special revelation.

B.       To abide means more than to be in Him.

C.      Some have the mistaken idea that salvation is without obligation.

D.      Claims of a mystical experience does not mean we know God.

IV.      Knowing Him Results In Our Love For Him Being Perfected Through Being Obedient (vs. 5).

A.       To love Him means we have gone beyond just knowing Him.

B.       Our love toward Jesus grows and develops as we obey Him.

C.      If we do not want to obey God, we do not love Him.

D.      To know Him is to be one with Him!

Conclusion

I.        How can you know if you know Jesus?

II.       Today we give you the opportunity to make Jesus the Lord of your life!

Good men prepare their heart for what is right.
