Sermon Outline Nov 16, 2008 Morning ServiceTopic: Eve: The Fundamentals Of Our FaithText: Psalms 11:3Introduction
I. Attacks against the fundamentals of Christian faith are rampant. II. There is a great danger in being constantly exposed to arguments that seek to undermine our faith.
Text
I. The Virgin Birth Is Fundamental To Our Faith (Luke 1:26ff; Matthew 1:18ff).A. The facts presented by Luke and Matthew are quite clear. 1. Mary was a virgin. 2. Mary’s conception was “of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 1:18, 20). B. To deny the fact of virgin birth is to deny: 1. That Jesus is the eternal word of God (John 1:1-2, 14). 2. That Jesus is God’s Son (Romans 8:3; Galatians 4:4). C. If the virgin birth is false then Jesus is the son of Joseph, not God. D. God is harsh toward any who deny the virgin birth (1 John 4:2-3). II. The Death On The Cross Is Fundamental To Our Faith (Matthew 27:33-50; John 19:17-38; Acts 2:23). A. The facts presented by the evangelists are quite clear. 1. Jesus “yielded up His spirit” (Matthew 27:50). 2. When the soldiers came they “saw that He was dead already”. 3. A soldier inflicted unsurvivable injuries to be certain. B. To deny that Jesus died on the cross is to deny: 1. That Jesus has died for our sins (Ephesians 2:1-5). 2. That we have been reconciled to God (Colossians 1:21). 3. That Jesus tasted death for everyone (Hebrews 2:9). 4. That the Devil has been rendered powerless (1 John 3:8). III. The Resurrection Is Fundamental To Our Faith (John 20:1-31). A. The record is quite clear. 1. Jesus was raised from the dead (Matthew 28:5-7). 2. He appeared to His disciples (Matthew 28:8-9; John 20:14, 19). 3. They saw and touched His wounds (John 20:20, 26-28). B. To deny the resurrection is to make crucial denials: 1. Regarding Jesus it says: a. That death has dominion over Him (Acts 2:31 & 24). b. He is not the Son of God (Romans 1:4). c. He did not ascend into heaven (Ephesians 1:20-21). d. He will not return (1 Thessalonians 1:10). 2. Regarding us it says: a. Everything we hope is in vain (1 Corinthians 15:14). b. We will not be resurrected (Romans 8:11). c. We are not saved (1 Corinthians 15:17). d. We have no hope (1 Peter 1:3; 1:21).
Conclusion
I. The fundamentals of our faith are constantly under attack. II. The apostles did not think it a pointless exercise to repeat and remind the brethren of the fundamentals of the faith (Philippians 3:1). A. To deny fundamental truths is to deny the whole. B. Let us constantly remind ourselves of the fundamentals of our faith. |
