Topic: Ungodly Dreamers

Text:           Jude 8-16 &19

Introduction

I.        Jude covered quite a bit of ground in his very short epistle.

A.       He exhorted his readers to “contend earnestly for the faith” (vs. 3).

B.       He warned of “ungodly men” who had “crept in unnoticed” (vs. 4).

C.      He reminded them of examples of God’s righteous condemnation of wickedness in the past (vs. 5-7).

II.       At the point we are looking at today, Jude follows the example set by Peter (2 Peter 2:10-17) and describes these “ungodly men” (Jude 8-16 & 19).

A.       In doing so, Jude does more than simply repeat Peter.

B.       He reinforces Peter’s words and adds more information about these “ungodly men”.

III.      In this study we shall consider Jude’s description of these “ungodly dreamers”.

A.       They “defile the flesh”.

B.       They “reject authority”.

C.      They “speak evil”.

Text

I.        They “Speak Evil” (8-11).

A.       …of dignitaries (vs. 8-9).

B.       …of whatever they do not know (vs. 10-11).

C.      Does this not caution us on how we speak of others?

II.       They “Defile The Flesh” (12-15,19)

A.       They were “spots” in the love feasts (12,19).

B.       The extent of their depravity is vividly illustrated (12-13).

C.      Their condemnation prophesied long ago (14-15).

III.      They “Reject Authority” (16,19).

A.       This is evidenced by the way they speak.

B.       Evidenced by the way they walk.

Conclusion

I.        The last phrase of verse 19 truly sums up the condition of these “ungodly dreamers”.

A.       “...not having the Spirit”.

B.       When they “defile the flesh, reject authority, and speak evil”, they demonstrate that they are walking “according to the lusts of the flesh”, not “according to the Spirit” (Galatians 5:16-23).

II.       The end of these “ungodly dreamers” is clearly stated.

A.       Paul declared, “those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God” (Galatians 5:21).

B.       Peter observed, “to whom the gloom of darkness is reserved forever” (2 Peter 2:17).

C.      Jude stated “for whom is reserved the blackness of darkness forever” (Jude 15).

One of the most tragic things about nature is that all of us tend to put off living. We are all dreaming of some magical rose garden over the horizon instead of enjoying the roses that are blooming outside our window today.
