Topic: Eve: A Woman Of Curiosity

Text:        Genesis 3:1-6

Introduction

I.        What a life of wonder Eve must have lived.

A.      She was the first to experience many wonderful things.

B.      She also experienced many horrific things.

C.      And there were always new things to discover.

D.      But ultimately, it was her curiosity that caused her greatest pain.

II.       But before we are too harsh on Eve let’s back up and examine the situation.

Text

I.        Curiosity Is Normal.

A.      Only the King James Version contains the word “curious”.

1.      Interestingly, it never means what we take it to mean today.

2.      Our meaning is “eager to learn or know; inquisitive”.

B.      Eve had to have been a curious person.

1.      Everyday there must have been new things to see, do and learn.

2.      We thrill at the sight of one who is curious.

C.      How could anyone who saw what Eve saw not be curious!

II.       Curiosity Can Be A Very Good Thing.

A.      Some possible examples:

1.      Lot was curious as to what lay around the next bend.

2.      Abraham wondered how God would fulfill His promises.

3.      Jonah couldn’t wait to see Ninevah’s looming destruction.

B.      God wants us to be curious.

1.      Curiosity creates a desire to know more about God (Psalm 2:3-5; Proverbs 4:5; 2 Peter 1:5).

2.      Curiosity opens the door to understanding (the Ethiopian nobleman was trying hard to understand (Acts 8:30-31)).

III.      Curiosity Can Be Very Bad.

A.      Curiosity can put us in situations that can hurt us.

B.      Curiosity can lead us away from the truth.

IV.     How Can Our Curiosity Be Properly Channelled?

A.      By providing adequate information.

B.      By being consistent.

C.      By being involved.

Conclusion

I.        Understand how far reaching this is.

A.      We have illustrated these points primarily by using children.

1.      We can see some of these traits in our own children.

2.      We can probably remember them from the days of our own youth as well.

B.      But these points are valid for everyone.

1.      Most of those the church loses have fallen prey to these matters.

2.      Those who remain faithful have learned to face these sorts of challenges.

II.       Like Eve, we all have a measure of curiosity in us.

III.      Properly channelled, our curiosity can bring us to Christ.
