Introduction

I. People are paying unusual attention to God’s Christ this month.
A. A lot of that attention is misguided.
B. Perhaps the understanding of many Christians is misguided too.
II. Jesus asked, “What do you think about the Christ?” (Matthew 22:42).
A. Both life and eternity are affected by what one thinks about the Christ.
B. Colossians emphasizes the power and the preeminence of Christ.

Discussion

I. Christ The Creator (Colossians 1:16).
A. Christ is the agent of material creation.
1. The natural is either the product of spontaneous generation or divine creation; there is no third option.
2. The universe reveals evidence of a creator (Romans 1:20; Psalm 19:1-5).
3. Jesus, the Christ, is the one by whom Almighty God made the heavens and the earth (Hebrews 1:2; John 1:3).
4. The material universe is a witness to the power of the word of Christ (Colossians 1:16; Hebrews 11:3).
B. Christ is the author of spiritual creation.
II. Christ Is The Sustainer Of Creation (Colossians 1:17).
A. Christ supports the material universe.
B. Christ supplies the needs of the spiritual creation; He authored it.
1. He provided for Israel’s needs (1 Corinthians 10:1-4).
2. It is He Christians depend on to withstand the forces of hell (Ephesians 6:10).
3. He supports His spiritual creation (Colossians 3:16).
III. The Church Stands As The Reality Of Christ’s Spiritual Creation (Colossians 1:18).
A. Christ is preeminent in the material universe as He created and controls it.
1. The important being in this universe is man (Genesis 1:27-28).
2. But in this universe man became disobedient; he sinned (Colossians 3:6; Romans 3:23).
3. But there is one spiritual domain where men are not rebellious, but righteous (Colossians 1:18).
B. The church consists of new men created in Christ (Ephesians 2:15-16).
1. The church consists of people who are reconciled to God through Christ (Colossians 1:20).
2. The church consists of blood-redeemed people (Colossians 1:14).
3. The church is the kingdom of Christ (Colossians 1:12-14).

Conclusion

I. The church is important as its existence reveals the creative and the redemptive power of Christ.
II. One who can speak a universe into existence can speak words of salvation (John 6:63 & 68).
III. The reality of the material universe stands as evidence of the reality of a spiritual creation as Christ is the author of both.
